38:42…A Run, Girl Post-Script

big finish

Techboo took this picture of me as I crossed the finish line in the Shadyside 5K on Saturday morning.

My official time: 38 minutes, 42 seconds.  I accomplished my dual goal of making it in under 40 minutes and not walking at all. I placed behind some babies in jogging strollers and some dogs, but ahead of some teenagers.  I count that as a victory!

Next time–and I decided at about the 2.5 mile mark that there will be a next time–I’m gunning for 30 minutes or less.

I learned some things.  One: Gravel (which is where I trained most recently) is a lot easier to run on than pavement, so I have to train on pavement.  Two: Don’t leave iPod with funny audiobook on it at home on race day.  Three: It really does help to have people cheer you on and high-five you along the way, even if those peoples are strangers.

After the race, TechBoo and I went to Pamela’s (a Pittsburgh institution) for breakfast.  I ordered a lot, but in the end my eyes were bigger than my stomach. Later, we went to BabyGirl’s soccer game.  She is a beast on the field and scored her teams only TWO GOALS!  She plays a mean defense as well.

We did the co-parenting thing with El Ex and Sherry (his wife), splitting chaffeuring duties, taking Mini-Me to not one, but two, birthday parties on Saturday.

The rest of the weekend was blissful–time spent with my boo always is.  He did some stuff off the Honey Do list and made sure I ate well (love that man!), while I prepped for the classes that I’m teaching.

Finishing the race on Saturday wasn’t just about finishing.  It means a lot to me that I set a fitness goal, and I met it.  I’ve never been anyone’s athlete, and have been unfit in my lifetime longer than I’ve been fit.  So this race also represents a long stride toward a better, healthier me.

So this girl plans to keep on running, and/or biking–whatever it takes to keep feeling this good.

Congratulations! A 5K is a great accomplishment and such a boost to your confidence. I just did my first 5K this summer and I want to do another one also. Keep me posted on your next run. In Florida, they do them year round which is something we never have in the northern states. Take care!

Thanks, Kim! Who knows? Maybe TechBoo and I will join you for a 5K in Florida some time. That would be fun–running as you and TechBoo crack on each other for 3.1 miles, lol…

Seriously, though, I would be down for that. The 5K and hanging out with you and Chuck again!

Congrats! My sis and I decided to get back into shape for a sprint triathlon this summer. Even with a summer of training the 5k at the end kicked my butt. I’m impressed with your run! Well done!

Hey, Aisha! I started training in late spring, but I wasn’t as consistent as I had hoped to be. But still it was still a milestone for me.

    Thanks for stopping by!
