Tapestries of Hope
I’m so lame. Tapestries of Hope has been on my to-blog list for a minute, but I hadn’t gotten around to it because it deserves much more than a rush job, and that’s where I am these days. But Amy Jussel at ShapingYouth has done the damn thing–and done it right. Here’s an excerpt from Amy, and a link to read the rest at ShapingYouth:
“Last August when Shaping Youth advisory board member and maverick documentary producer/director Michealene Cristini Risley returned from Zimbabwe, she pinged me with a handful of understated words, “Back…quite an experience!”
“The links told the story…news from AllAfrica.com and Voice of America about Michealene being arrested, tossed in jail, and deported for filming activist Betty Makoni’s Girl Child Network about the bitty baby survivors of horrific rape and abuse. (men with HIV/AIDS are tainted by the mythology that having sex with a virgin will cure them of the disease)
“Then yesterday, Michealene’s headline in this Huffington Post article equating the cost of human life in Zimbabwe to a $4 fast food meal wrenched me back into action for an update on the progress of Tapestries of Hope (YouTube trailer here) as she edges toward the finish line of her film’s fruition…”

Hey Deesha, thanks for spreading the word…
I just used their Facebook ’cause’ app to attach the link to my article and tell others about the film…I don’t know how much that’ll do, but it’s sure a cool tool from a social media standpoint to get some ‘one click’ buy-in…
That said, it makes me wonder how many people feel ‘spammed’ by same, so I need to watch that, as I have so many ’causes’ I could be clickin’ non-stop! heehe…
I think I need to ask Beth Kanter about this since she’s the NP guru on same (she’s the one that used Twitter to earn $1000 in 24 hrs. to help send a girl to college in Cambodia; and snagged the top slot of the ‘America’s giving’ challenge in Parade mag to receive a $50,000 grant for her cause (orphanage/Sharing Foundation)—All with a few tweets and clicks. Pretty freakin’ amazing what techno-smarts can do.
Here’s the piece I wrote on Shaping Youth about Beth’s feat, called “Let’s show how positive social media works!” http://www.shapingyouth.org/blog/?p=1070
She’s awesome. –Amy
